Mrs. Christine Conyers

Christine Conyers, 91, a resident of Sumter, South Carolina, departed this life on May 19, 2026 at her home. Christine Conyers was a devoted mother, grandmother, sister, and friend whose life was marked by strength, faith, and service to others. She was united in marriage to James Conyers, who worked as a tree logger. Together they were blessed with four children before the passing of her husband in 1975. Left to raise her children on her own, Christine demonstrated remarkable courage and determination. With the loving support of her brother and sister, along with their spouses, she worked tirelessly to provide for her family and ensure her children were cared for and loved. Christine was no stranger to hard work. She picked cotton, cropped tobacco, and performed many other forms of farm labor. Her dedication and work ethic were evident in all she did. She was a homemaker who later became an in-home daycare provider after the loss of her husband. Through her care and nurturing spirit, she touched the lives of many children in her community. Affectionately known as “Big Mama” to some and “Mrs. Conyers” to others, she became a mother figure to countless neighborhood children. At an early age, Christine enjoyed playing basketball, softball, and dodgeball with her children, sister, cousins, nieces, and nephews. She carried that same joyful and loving spirit throughout her life. After moving to Sumter in 1977, Christine became a faithful member of the Plaza Church of Christ. Later, she placed membership with the Kingsbury Road Church of Christ to help support the establishment of the new congregation. Her faith was an important part of her life, and she found great joy in singing gospel music and reading her Bible. Christine leaves to cherish her memory her children: Levon (Mary) Conyers, James L. (Joyce) Conyers, and Rosa L. Conyers; one grandson: Christopher Conyers; two granddaughters: Melisa Nelson, and Aniya Nelson; one great-granddaughter, Kalani Moody; sister: Rosa Ragin; brother: James (Emma) Dennis, and a host of loving nieces, nephews, relatives, and friends whose lives she touched deeply. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband, James Conyers, and her son, Lydell Conyers. Christine’s legacy of love, faith, hard work, and compassion will forever remain in the hearts of all who knew and loved her.
