Mrs. Mary Campbell Ramsey

“To everything there is a season, a time for every purpose under heaven.” Ecclesiastes 3:1 Mrs. Mary Ree Campbell Ramsey, widow of the late Leroy Ramsey, was born on May 6,1948, in Camden, South Carolina, to the late Samuel Campbell and Mary Hunter Campbell. She peacefully transitioned to her eternal rest on Sunday, March 22, at her home in Sumter, South Carolina. Mary Ree was educated in the public schools of Sumter County and was a 1966 graduate of Ebenezer High School in Dalzell, South Carolina. She was employed as a seamstress at Glen Manufacturing and later retired after several years of service at a poultry processing facility in Hopkins, South Carolina. At an early age, Mary Ree attended Willow Grove AME Church in Horatio. She later became a devoted and longtime member of Wayman Chapel AME Church, where she served faithfully until her death. Her presence was always felt through her bright smile and warm Sunday morning greetings. Over the years, she was an active member of the Wilhelmenia “Sweetheart” Burgess Women’s Missionary Society, the Stewardess Board, Church School, the Pastor’s Aid Society, and the Young Adult Choir. Mary Ree knew her late husband, Leroy, for many years before they became sweethearts after reconnecting at a program at Willow Grove AME Church. They were united in holy matrimony on January 7, 1970, and to this union, three children were born. Mary Ree was a devoted wife, mother, and grandmother. She was a loving disciplinarian whose guidance shaped her children’s lives, and in time, they came to truly appreciate her wisdom and care. She expressed her love through time spent with family, especially during holidays and birthdays, where her delicious sweet potato pies were always a favorite. In her leisure time, Mary Ree enjoyed watching her favorite soap operas. She was known for “keeping it real,” never hesitating to express her approval or disapproval. She took pride in her appearance, enjoying visits to the hairdresser and keeping her nails done. She also cherished her friendships and looked forward to gatherings with classmates and events hosted by the Ebenezer Alumni Association. Precious memories of her life will be forever cherished by her loving children: Barbara Bright of Charlotte, NC; Lindsey (Melissa) Ramsey of Rembert, SC; and William (Tomekia) Ramsey of Sumter, SC; five grandchildren: Zy’iana Ramsey, McKenize Ramsey, Marquis Baker, Antoinette Bright, and Kirksey Beaty; one sister, Irene Simmons of Cross, SC; two brothers, Francis (Ruth) Campbell of Rembert, SC and Stevenson (Dawn) Campbell of Hopkins, SC; two sisters-in-law, Josephine Campbell of Washington, DC, Juanita (Elbert) Deas of Sumter, SC; one brother-in-law, Dennis Nickens of Sumter, SC; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives and dear friends.
